mb\u00c3\u00a1t<\/a> <\/strong><\/em>or mb\u00c3\u00a1<\/strong> <\/em>(noun): <\/em>son; child, offspring. Also occurs as a prefix: mb\u00c3\u00a1- <\/em>or mba-<\/em>, as in mb\u00c3\u00a1-yarut\u00c3\u00bayel <\/em>‘Star-Children.’<\/p>\n

Like most nouns that end in -t, mb\u00c3\u00a1(t)<\/em> has an irregular definite form – mb\u00c3\u00a1rut – <\/em>in the nominative. It can occur as a standalone noun, but it is much more frequently encountered in its prefix forms. When used in this way, it can signify any of the following:<\/p>\n

1) a patronymic – e.g. mb\u00c3\u00a1-Marcut <\/em>‘son of Marcut’ (also occurs as a personal name, Mb\u00c3\u00a1marcut<\/em>);<\/p>\n

2) a cohort of a sons by a single father that live in one place. Thus mb\u00c3\u00a1-Marcut<\/em> can also mean “[all the] sons of Marcut” – depending on context;<\/p>\n

3) an heir or successor of a certain person’s property or their traits, such as mba-r\u00c3\u00a1ndut<\/em> ‘king’s son\/successor’. Note that this does not necessarily imply a blood\/kinship relationship, so mb\u00c3\u00a1-ngill\u00c3\u00a1ndut <\/em>‘heir of [my] paternal uncle’ just means “the person who\u00c2\u00a0 inherits my uncle’s property” or even more simply “the person who is like my uncle”, as in the following:<\/p>\n
