Also occurs as a prefix: <em>mb\u00c3\u00a1- <\/em>or <em>mba-<\/em>, as in <em>mb\u00c3\u00a1-yarut\u00c3\u00bayel <\/em>&#8216;Star-Children.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p><em>m\u00c3\u00a1r ng\u00c3\u00baya ca-<strong>mb\u00c3\u00a1t<\/strong>es<br \/>\n<\/em><small>he is my-son.ESS<\/small><br \/>\n&#8220;he is my son&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Like most nouns that end in -t, <em>mb\u00c3\u00a1(t)<\/em> has an irregular definite form &#8211; <em>mb\u00c3\u00a1rut &#8211; <\/em>in the nominative. It can occur as a standalone noun, but it is much more frequently encountered in its prefix forms. When used in this way, it can signify any of the following:<\/p>\n<p>1) a patronymic &#8211; e.g. <em>mb\u00c3\u00a1-Marcut <\/em>&#8216;son of Marcut&#8217; (also occurs as a personal name, <em>Mb\u00c3\u00a1marcut<\/em>);<\/p>\n<p>2) a cohort of a sons by a single father that live in one place. Thus <em>mb\u00c3\u00a1-Marcut<\/em> can also mean &#8220;[all the] sons of Marcut&#8221; &#8211; depending on context;<\/p>\n<p>3) an heir or successor of a certain person&#8217;s property or their traits, such as <em>mba-r\u00c3\u00a1ndut<\/em> &#8216;king&#8217;s son\/successor&#8217;. Note that this does not necessarily imply a blood\/kinship relationship, so <em>mb\u00c3\u00a1-ngill\u00c3\u00a1ndut <\/em>&#8216;heir of [my] paternal uncle&#8217; just means &#8220;the person who\u00c2\u00a0 inherits my uncle&#8217;s property&#8221; or even more simply &#8220;the person who is like my uncle&#8221;, as in the following:<\/p>\n<p><em>ca ng\u00c3\u00baya mb\u00c3\u00a1-ngill\u00c3\u00a1ndesut<\/em><br \/>\n<small>I am son\/heir-paternal.uncle.ESS.DEF<\/small><br \/>\n&#8220;I am [my] paternal uncle&#8217;s heir&#8221; or &#8220;I&#8217;m like my uncle&#8221; (metonymically)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>mb\u00c3\u00a1t or mb\u00c3\u00a1 (noun): son; child, offspring.
