High Eolic word of the day: yattá

yattá (noun): eyes, pair of eyes.

“I shall gouge out [his] eyes because of [his] crimes”

yattá is one of a handful of nouns in High Eolic which cannot take any number/definiteness markers. It is clearly derived from the noun tar ‘eye’, probably from a plural form used with an initial intensifying vowel or epenthetic.
